The practice of yoga is an art and science committed to creating union between body, mind and spirit. Adopting a regular Yoga practice can assist the practitioner in using the breath and body to foster a deeper awareness of Self. It is also about restoring balance and creating equanimity so as to live in peace, good health and harmony with our environment.
No matter where you go every Yoga instructor is different and every class is unique. The Joyful Lotus approach to teaching Yoga is making Yoga accessible to anyone interested in learning new ways to cultivate inner peace and balance. We aim to meet the needs of our students no matter what their experience level or background.
All of our classes are deeply rooted in the Asanas. The physical component of Yoga is a very practical and beneficial place to begin a Yoga practice. Depending on who attends a class we may also offer an introduction to Yoga philosophy by teaching the Yamas and Niyamas. We may include breathing exercises and meditation training. It really depends on what the group is into at the time. We never force our spiritual beliefs on our students, but we do create a space for everyone to practice a connection with the Divine Creator. All religious beliefs are welcomed and honored in our classes.
Yoga is more than just moving the body into uncomfortable physical postures, or a form of exercise. It is a way of life centered on mindfulness, body awareness, breath control and meditation. At its core Yoga offers an 8 step path to finding inner peace. The 8 limbs are:
Yama : Universal morality
Niyama : Personal observances
Asanas : Body postures
Pranayama : Breathing exercises, and control of prana
Pratyahara : Control of the senses
Dharana : Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
Dhyana : Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
Samadhi : Union with the Divine
