Most of the information I’ve read on using CBD for sleep generally says that “higher” doses work best for sleep and insomnia. The Mayo Clinic’s site use to say to try a dose from 40 – 160 mg of CBD. This range is indeed higher than a typical serving size of CBD, which is more in the range of 10 – 20 mg. Let me know if you have any questions please.

Even without changes at the federal level, there are steps that states could take on their own to make the CBD market safer. States with broad marijuana legality or CBD-only measures could mandate the calibration and regulation of testing labs, and use them to conduct safety testing. People suffering from insomnia often find themselves in a vicious circle; they are constantly exposed to stress and thus start to have anxious thoughts over time; chronic stress and anxiety trigger insomnia; insomnia leads to depression.

“By smoking weed, you suppress the REM sleep, and with that you also suppress a lot of important functions of that REM sleep. One of those functions is reliving the things you have experienced and coming to terms with them, as it were. Processing all kinds of psychological influences is something you do in REM sleep. You also anticipate the things that will happen the next day or the days after that. While you're sleeping, you already consider those and make decisions in advance."
Hello and thanks for your comment. I’m sorry to hear you haven’t had any success with the CBD for helping you sleep. Most people find that CBD helps them get to sleep better if taken within 1 hour of going to bed. How much have you been taking? As long as you are comfortable with it, you may want to increase the dose a little bit to see if that has a better effect for sleep.
It also is distinct from THC which acts as a CB1/CB2 partial agonist, thereby stimulating the receptor sites.  If it acted the same as THC at the CB1/CB2 receptor sites, its therapeutic potential may be reduced.  Moreover, since cannabidiol acts as an inverse agonist at the CB1/CB2 receptor sites, it doesn’t induce psychological euphoria and/or pleasure associated with downstream dopaminergic enhancement in the mesolimbic pathway (resulting from CB1/CB2 agonism).
Whatever the case, if you suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, depression, or insomnia, I would absolutely recommend you give a quality CBD oil a shot. I was certainly not quick to buy into the whole hype machine (I know that the cannabis industry is pretty crazy right now), but I can say as a first time user that it legitimately did work, and it caused absolutely no high or side effects whatsoever.

Basically, these receptors are found all throughout your body and in part, describe why CBD can impact many different conditions.

Hemp oil — obtained by pressing benefit-rich hemp seeds — is slightly different than cannabis oil, although they both come from the same genus, Cannabis, and the same species, Cannabis Sativa. The term hemp is used to describe a Cannabis Sativa plant that contains only trace amounts of THC. Hemp is a high-growing plant that’s commonly grown for industrial uses, such as oils and topical ointments, as well as fiber for clothing, construction, paper and more.
Cannabidiol can be taken into the body in multiple different ways, including by inhalation of cannabis smoke or vapor, as an aerosol spray into the cheek, and by mouth. It may be supplied as an oil containing only CBD as the active ingredient (no added THC or terpenes), a full-plant CBD-dominant hemp extract oil, capsules, dried cannabis, or as a prescription liquid solution.[1][3]

That’s precisely why I was intrigued when I started hearing about CBD, or cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive compound found in the cannabis or hemp plant that apparently helps with sleep and anxiety. I didn’t exactly get my hopes up ― after all, tons of natural remedies that worked for other people hadn’t worked for me ― but I figured it was worth a shot.
Research reveals that CBD can is an effective treatment option with a wide array of natural health properties. Studies are still ongoing about the other positive characteristics of CBD, but it has been proven that consumption of this compound is relatively safe. Just as important, CBD is also legal in all 50 states without a prescription. Cannabis oil, however, does not enjoy the same legal umbrella due to its THC content and psychoactive properties. Therefore, users who purchase or use THC or Cannabis oil in states where marijuana is illegal may be breaking the law.

I used to have really bad anxiety and would take CBD once or twice a week for anxiety attacks. I barely have any anxiety or depression anymore. CBD literally changed my life. I still have to mentally talk myself through stressful situations but CBD definitely takes the edge off. CBD also blocked reconsolidation of aversive memories in rat [76]. Briefly, fear memories, when reactivated by re-exposure (retrieval), enter into a labile state in which the memory trace may either be reconsolidated or extinguished [97], and this process may be pharmacologically modulated to achieve reconsolidation blockade or extinction. When administered immediately following retrieval, CBD prevented freezing to the conditioned context upon further re-exposure, and no reinstatement or spontaneous recovery was observed over 3 weeks, consistent with reconsolidation blockade rather than extinction [76]. This effect depended on CB1R activation but not 5-HT1AR activation [76].


When is the best time to take the CBD for sleep problems? The local “authority” maintains that it must be taken in 3 doses throughout the day or will have no effect whatsoever, but I find nothing online to substantiate this claim. Can it be taken as a supplement to prescription medications for sleep disorders? All sites say to consult your physician but physicians (and pharmacists) claim to know nothing about CBD.
CBD oil can also be taken in a tincture which contains the oil itself, as well as a diluting agent such as alcohol or another oil base. Generally, tinctures have a lower amount of CBD per dose, but they can still be an effective means of obtaining relief from sleep disorders. For easy ingestion, simply drop the tincture directly on your tongue and allow it to dissolve prior to swallowing.

A study is underway to see how CBD helps patients with PTSD and alcohol use disorder, and another is exploring how CBD might help curb drug cravings in people with opioid addiction. Harper was diagnosed as an infant with CDKL5, a rare genetic condition doctors only discovered in 2004 and that afflicts roughly 600 people worldwide. The disorder shares its name with the minute particle of DNA it affects, a gene responsible for the production of a protein crucial for neurological development. Symptoms of CDKL5 include intellectual disability, developmental delays, breathing and vision problems, limited or absent speech, poor muscle tone, and, perhaps worst of all, frequent seizures.
Increased anxiety: Rodents administered cannabidiol daily for 14 days exhibited anxiogenic behaviors. In other words, the cannabidiol may increase anxiety when used too regularly.  Although this effect cannot be confirmed in humans, it is logical to assume that a person’s neurophysiology will adapt to the effects of CBD when used regularly, possibly blunting its efficacy.
For example, the six hemp oil companies the FDA had investigated in February had explicitly advertised CBD products for use in the “cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of diseases.” The agency sent warning letters to the companies, ordering them to change their product labeling or face potential legal action. Then, in May, the FDA announced it was excluding products containing cannabidiol from its definition of dietary supplements altogether. Hard, the spokesman for Medical Marijuana, Inc., said the company views “these developments as positive because this allows the debate regarding CBD to come to the forefront.” He characterized the FDA’s May announcement as “an opinion” and added, “Medical Marijuana, Inc. and HempMeds, along with industry associations, are working on determining how we can come to a mutual understanding on the matter with the FDA.”
Even as the research proceeds, thousands of people are using CBD as medicine. A British pharmaceutical company, GW Pharma, has developed two CBD drugs: Sativex, which contains a 1-to-1 ratio of CBD and THC, and Epidiolex, which is pure CBD. The former is prescribed for the painful muscle spasms that occur in multiple sclerosis, while the latter is aimed at childhood seizures. Sativex is not available in the United States, but it is approved in 29 other countries, including Canada, England and Israel.
CBD concentrates typically contain the strongest dosage of CBD compared to any other CBD products. It can contain up to 10 times the average CBD products. Concentrates are also convenient in that it only takes a few seconds to consume. Overall, CBD concentrates seem to be most popular among customers who are extremely busy, yet seek high potency CBD.
It’s taken me a while to get on the CBD kick but the more I research, the more excited I am about it, and…. the more disappointed I am in our society that there are so many politics involved with hemp. Hi Eric, sorry to hear you are suffering. In regards to the oils, i am no doctor and tried a few before i found what works best for me. I think it depends on your condition and genetics. For example, I use green roads and it is extremely effective, but it doesn’t work for my wife. I think you have to find the one that works for you. Maybe someone else can who has more experience can also help.


As it turns out, healthy sleep-wake cycles are extremely dependent on our state of “alertness” during the day. If you are a victim of insomnia, for example, you (along with millions of other individuals) are likely drowsy, fatigued, and generally “out-of-sorts” during the afternoon. As you might imagine, this wreaks havoc on your sleep-wake cycle as it makes it nearly impossible to enter and maintain the non-REM sleep that you need at night.

I started taking 100 mg cbd a month ago (2-3 drops at night every other day) I had a eye twitch and stayed up late doing homework and on my phone but was able to sleep fine. A few weeks ago I started increasing my dosage. 4-5 drop before bedtime every night (though my eye twitching is gone) the past two weeks I have been suffering from horrible insomnia/anxiety/depression/loss of appetite. Could CBD not be for me? Am I not taking enough? Can the low dosage I am taking be stimulating my nervous system keeping me up at night? help.

Acute vs. Chronic: Most studies have examined the acute effects of CBD rather than effects associated with chronic, ongoing administration.
