People with specific phobias experinence strong, irrational fears of certain objects, places, or situations (fear of snakes, flying, big spaces, small spaces, etc.). These phobias can disrupt daily routines and limit a persons abilities to function properly. Some phobias develop in childhood, while others in adolescence or early adulthood. 19 million, 8.7% of the US population suffer from specific phobias. Women are twice as likely to be affected as men.
This is a topic I am asked about all the time, and have been for years: how does cannabis help sleep and health? I’ve heard that the number-two reason why people smoke or use cannabis is for sleep. Considering the recent passing of the recreational use of cannabis in California and other several states I think it is high time (pun intended!) to look at CBD, one of the most active ingredients in medical cannabis.
Throughout the SPST, researchers utilized the Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS), Negative Self-Statement scale (SSPS-N), and physiological measures (blood pressure, heart rate, skin conductance) to determine the anxiolytic efficacy of CBD. Results indicated that those receiving the CBD exhibited significantly less anxiety, cognitive deficits, speech discomfort, and decreased alertness on the VAMS measure. Contrastingly, the individuals receiving the placebo exhibited high anxiety, cognitive deficits, high alertness, and overall discomfort on the VAMS.
Regardless of how CBD oil induces hippocampal neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells may be enough to decrease anxiety. A report published in 2015 documented that increasing adult neurogenesis (regardless of the modality) is sufficient enough to decrease anxiety. Therefore, it could be that CBD is an effective anxiolytic predominantly through mechanisms implicated in neurogenesis.
One important thing to clarify is that CBD can be found either in Cannabis plants or hemp. Hemp and marijuana oil fall under the same genus, Cannabis. So marijuana oil refers to either the Cannabis Sativa or Indica plants that are cultivated and grown to produce resinous trichomes. These trichomes contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, so these plants are bred for their psychoactive qualities.

Based on the existing scientific literature, it is impossible to conclude whether CBD is therapeutically effective as a treatment for anxiety disorders – especially when administered chronically and/or over a long-term. Neuroprotective properties: There’s some evidence to suggest that CBD may act as a neuroprotective agent. So far, though, there’s scant clinical evidence for the claimed benefits of CBD. In June, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first CBD drug, Epidiolex, for treating seizures associated with two rare forms of epilepsy. Otherwise, the FDA doesn’t consider CBD products to be dietary supplements—manufacturers can’t claim the products will diagnose, treat, or cure any diseases. Instead, CBD product literature contains phrases like “restore vitality,” “relax and recover,” and “may keep healthy people healthy.”
Hemp-based CBD, on the other hand, is most often sourced from legal industrial hemp plants that contain very small amounts of THC. This type of CBD can be grown under the United States Farm Bill. If you are going to be buying oils for anxiety from an online seller, for example, then you will likely be purchasing a product that has been sourced from hemp, rather than marijuana. This is perfectly fine, because even though industrial hemp lacks the mind-altering THC compound, it contains functional amounts of CBD.

Hash oil or cannabis oil is an oleoresin obtained by the extraction of cannabis or hashish. It is a concentrated form of the plant containing many of its resins and terpenes – in particular, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and other cannabinoids. There are a variety of extraction methods, but most involve a solvent such as butane or ethanol.
