There may be some drawbacks associated with using CBD oil for anxiety, especially over a long-term.  Hypothetical drawbacks could result from CBD usage include: deleterious epigenetic and/or neurophysiological effects, increased anxiety, tolerance onset (with decreased efficacy over time), and/or withdrawal symptoms.  Keep in mind that many of these drawbacks are merely speculative and cannot be confirmed.
While researching for this blog, we discovered some major disparities between the findings in scientific studies and the anecdotal evidence of regular CBD users. Unfortunately, the academic research is fundamentally flawed, and in some cases, seemingly compromised by a conflict of interest. Similarly, it can be difficult to conclude the true nature of anecdotal arguments.
Based on the existing scientific literature, it is impossible to conclude whether CBD is therapeutically effective as a treatment for anxiety disorders – especially when administered chronically and/or over a long-term.  However, considerable evidence supports the efficacy of CBD when administered acutely for: social phobia, public speaking anxiety, and environmental stress.  Acute administration of CBD appears to improve subjective, physiological, and objective measures of anxiety in stressful situations.

About one in ten Americans suffer from restless leg syndrome (RLS). This disorder is characterized by an overwhelming urge to move ones legs while at rest or trying to sleep. These urges are often unpleasant and can cause great discomfort and of course a lack of sleep. The cause of RLS is still unknown, but research suggests that it can be related to abnormalities in the central nervous system.
It also is distinct from THC which acts as a CB1/CB2 partial agonist, thereby stimulating the receptor sites.  If it acted the same as THC at the CB1/CB2 receptor sites, its therapeutic potential may be reduced.  Moreover, since cannabidiol acts as an inverse agonist at the CB1/CB2 receptor sites, it doesn’t induce psychological euphoria and/or pleasure associated with downstream dopaminergic enhancement in the mesolimbic pathway (resulting from CB1/CB2 agonism).

Remember, more isn’t necessarily better.
One of the biggest players in this new industry is Medical Marijuana, Inc., a company formed in 2009 that operates out of Poway, California, just north of San Diego. It has played a leading role in the so-called Green Rush, as businesses have moved quickly to capitalize on the gradual legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes by states across the country. The company’s spokesman, Andrew Hard, boasted that Medical Marijuana, Inc., “created the CBD industry and was first to market with CBD products.” Through its various subsidiaries, Medical Marijuana, Inc. sells some of the most recognizable products on the cannabis market— everything from Cibaderm CBD-infused shampoo to CanChew chewing gum. In 2014, the company generated $14.5 million in revenue.
I will say that it was pretty awkward trying to not swallow for 90 seconds – it’s a totally unnatural feeling, and you feel like you’re going to start drooling all over yourself. You’ll have to fight the instinct to swallow just a little bit, but it’s really not that bad (also, it says on the bottle that you can hold for 60 seconds instead of the full 90 if you want to). I did take a nice big swig of cold water after I swallowed the oil, though, just to get the slightly bitter-ish vanilla flavor out of my mouth (but again, the flavor really is not bad).
Relevant studies are summarized in Table ​Table3.3. In a SPECT study of resting cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in normal subjects, CBD reduced rCBF in left medial temporal areas, including the amygdala and hippocampus, as well as the hypothalamus and left posterior cingulate gyrus, but increased rCBF in the left parahippocampal gyrus. These rCBF changes were not correlated with anxiolytic effects [102]. In a SPECT study, by the same authors, in patients with SAD, CBD reduced rCBF in overlapping, but distinct, limbic and paralimbic areas; again, with no correlations to anxiolytic effects [104].
At first, I was wary. Although I live in Los Angeles, where it seems like there’s a medical marijuana depot on every corner, I’m not one for doing drugs (legal or otherwise). I mean, I don’t even take Advil when I get a headache!  But despite the fact that CBD oil is made from hemp, it doesn’t contain THC. THC is the compound responsible for the “high” that comes with ingesting marijuana. In fact, scientific reviews have proven that CBD “does not interfere with several psychomotor and psychological functions,” and is safe to ingest without any side effects. Let me repeat: YOU WILL NOT GET HIGH FROM CBD!

Over the past two years, 17 states have passed laws legalizing CBD so that patients can obtain the drug without fear of prosecution from local authorities. For intractable childhood epilepsies—the sorts of seizure disorders that for centuries have ruined lives and shattered families, the ones even specialists like Hernandez dread—CBD could be a miracle cure.
I had come to meet Dr. Angel Hernandez, the director of the hospital’s pediatric epilepsy program. A trail of wall-mounted signs led me to the pediatric neurology ward, a bright and airy space with flat-screen TVs running cartoons nonstop. Decorative kites were strung up in the corridors, and rainbow curtains lined the windows. Some of the kids in the waiting area that morning were alert and awake, others groggy. Some were strapped into special strollers designed for children with mobility problems, and some had shaven heads and healing scars. Hernandez came out to greet me, and I was surprised he recognized me after what felt like a very long time. He had diagnosed me with epilepsy in 2004 and treated me for several years.

In a series of placebo-controlled studies involving 15 healthy volunteers, Fusar-Poli et al. investigated the effects of CBD and THC on task-related blood-oxygen-level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging activation, specifically the go/no-go and fearful faces tasks [109, 110]. The go/no-go task measures response inhibition, and is associated with activation of medial prefrontal, dorsolateral prefrontal, and parietal areas [111]. Response activation is diminished in PTSD and other anxiety disorders, and increased activation predicts response to treatment [112]. CBD produced no changes in predicted areas (relative to placebo) but reduced activation in the left insula, superior temporal gyrus, and transverse temporal gyrus. The fearful faces task activates the amygdala, and other medial temporal areas involved in emotion processing, and heightened amygdala response activation has been reported in anxiety disorders, including GAD and PTSD [113, 114]. CBD attenuated blood-oxygen-level dependent activation in the left amygdala, and the anterior and posterior cingulate cortex in response to intensely fearful faces, and also reduced amplitude in skin conductance fluctuation, which was highly correlated with amygdala activation [109]. Dynamic causal modeling analysis in this data set further showed CBD reduced forward functional connectivity between the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex [110].
I’ve been struggling with sleep for almost a decade. I started with over-the-counter pills for sleep, then moved to Xanax for sleep. The Xanax works like magic to help me sleep. I’d take three 0.5mg and in 30 mins I’d be in a deeep sleep. However, I would like to wing off pills to sleep for my poor liver and just within the last 2 days have came across this CBD alternative. Given how long I’ve been using a sleep aid and amount I take to sleep, what mg would you recommend taking to sleep? I wanna buy the pen. Also, is there different brands, or strains or whatever like there is with THC “regular weed” or is it all pretty much the same and only separated by MG amount? If there is a different strain of these oils which one is best for pain and for insomnia?
Has anyone done the math? How much could 40mg of CBD cost/night? How much would 160mg cost? The problem is the recommended dose and doses available on the market do not jive. Why the discrepancy between dose recommended by researchers and dose available in the products? Will higher CBD oils be available in the future? For me, right now it would cost $90 to get to sleep on CBD. Totally unrealistic.
The family of 5-HT receptors or serotonin receptors are a group of G-protein coupled receptors. They play a big role in anxiety. These receptors bind to CBD and when activated by it, and this results in an anti-depressant effect. These receptors also work in processes such as anxiety, addiction, appetite, sleep, pain perception, nausea, vomiting, etc.
People who smoke cannabis often smoke it to get high and for its calming qualities, using cannabis specifically cultivated for very high amounts of THC content. Strains such as skunk are bred to contain as much of the psychoactive compound as possible, with THC levels increasing dramatically over the last few decades due to the popularity of THC’s effects for recreational users.
The American public is starting to see the light when it comes to CBD as a safe and effective treatment option for a long list of medical problems. While THC and similar oils have been used for their health benefits going back to the dawn of civilization (even before the Great Wall of China was built!), people are just recently rediscovering the profound positive impact these oils can have on treating ailments.

Rule #2 – Be consistent with your dosing. Don’t start small and then jump to higher doses. It’s important that your body gets accustomed to the CBD, so gradually increase the amount over time. Also, don’t get discouraged if you do not notice effects immediately – some people have said it took them up to two weeks of daily use before they started noticing positive results.
Overall, it’s important to look for CBD products that are lab tested. These tinctures may only be as good as they are potent and its important to trust the companies that you’re purchasing from. When shopping for CBD for sleep, make sure to see if the products have been tested by an independent third party lab for purity and potency. Did you read the label? Does the ingredients list agree with you? If you’re a person with a lot of anxiety, you might need a higher dose of CBD to help with your sleep. Double check the label to make sure that the CBD content is clearly outlined. Some labels will not distinguish between hemp extract and CBD content (there is a difference) so it’s important to make sure you understand the products you are purchasing. So far, though, there’s scant clinical evidence for the claimed benefits of CBD. In June, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first CBD drug, Epidiolex, for treating seizures associated with two rare forms of epilepsy. Otherwise, the FDA doesn’t consider CBD products to be dietary supplements—manufacturers can’t claim the products will diagnose, treat, or cure any diseases. Instead, CBD product literature contains phrases like “restore vitality,” “relax and recover,” and “may keep healthy people healthy.”

How was the CBD extracted? The most advanced extraction process today is known as CO2 extraction, and only a number of companies, in our opinion, excel at it. This is the process of removing fats and lipids to create pure CBD oil. Always check to see the company’s CBD oil extraction process, and stay away from products that have been extracted using butane.


“I just felt good,” he adds. “But I wasn’t high at all.” Joliat’s anecdotal experience with CBD is a common one. Some informal polling suggests a lot of people today are at least vaguely familiar with cannabidiol, and have either used it themselves or know someone who has. But even some people who use it don’t seem to know exactly what it is or whether there’s any hard science out there to back up its benefits.
