American veterans have been vocal in the discourse regarding medical marijuana. Scientists found that people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are deficient in endocannabinoids. They also found that CB1 receptors signal the deactivation of traumatic memories. PTSD is increasingly popping up on states’ lists of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. In June 2017, Colorado added PTSD to its list making it the ninth and most recent qualifying condition. New York added PTSD to its tightly controlled program this year after pressure from veterans groups made its way to the governor. Those affected by PTSD often suffer from extreme anxiety, drastically impacting their life and ability to interact with others.

Hey Linda. Sorry to hear you are struggling with sleep. I know how frustrating this can be. As I’m not a medical professional, I cannot give you advice on dosage for CBD. The Mayo Clinic used to have a dosage guidelines page but they have since taken it down. The dosage they had listed which could potentially help with sleep was 40 mg to 160 mg of CBD. I recommend you let your prescribing physician know you are using CBD alongside the Lunesta.

The ratio of THC to CBD in a product is also important. Hello everyone I’m kimberly a 25 year old mother & wife. I’ve been suffering with extreme anxiety and panic attacks since August of 2016 every single day now and it was so bad I couldn’t leave my bedroom I didn’t want to eat or anything I felt dead and I was always running to the hospital or doctors because I thought I was dying when I would have an attack. I even tried Xanax, Ativan, Betta blockers & some other medicine the doctor prescribed and omg it made it worse I felt brain foggy & weird so I stopped it after almost two months. I was a person who love to drive anywhere and travel and do things with my family and dirt bike ride and work etc but I became so afraid of Everything I lost my job and lost so much weight and man it was bad and last year I became pregnant and for six months my anxiety and panic attacks weren’t so bad they calmed down & I was able to cope with it and relax a little better. I use to smoke marijuana until one day I smoked something very strong & I was so paranoid it was scary so I stopped smoking (this was before I was pregnant) well after I had my baby this past December my anxiety & panic attacks are coming back strong again. I feel warm feeling in my head and pain lower part of the back of my head, dizziness, nausea, mind racing, heart palpitations & shaky & etc I’ve experienced a lot & I’ve been checked for everything & I am healthy I just need to exercise more I’ve even had a mri & ct scan & they saw nothing wrong.. Tammy et al, Through trial and error you will find a correct dosage. Try 50 mg daily....25 each 2x daily....if no results up the dosage until it works for you. Remember, there has never been a death from marijuana or CBD use. You might want to try a tincture or rub with CBD and THC. You won't get the psych high from it. Helps my friend with PArkinsons tremors. She takes 50mg of tincture and uses the rub morning and night. It is a miracle for arthritis. Good luck
A study published in 1993 by Zuardi et al. attempted to elucidate the effects of ipsapirone and cannabidiol among humans exposed to an experimental anxiety task.  For the study, researchers recruited 40 healthy volunteers that were assigned to a simulated public speaking (SPS) test – designed to mimic the effects of public speaking.  The 40 participants were divided into 4 groups of 10 – each of which was assigned randomly to receive: CBD (300 mg), Valium (10 mg), ipsapirone (5 mg), or a placebo.
Side effects: There appear to be no significant unwanted side effects associated with CBD compared to a placebo. Many anxiolytics carry severe side effects such as: brain fog, drowsiness, inability to retrieve memories, impaired learning, sexual dysfunction, etc.  Individuals taking CBD are unlikely to experience severe unwanted side effects.  (Read more: “CBD side effects“).

Researchers Bergamaschi et al. (2011) highlighted previous literature regarding CBDs anxiolytic properties and lack of psychotomimetic effects.  For this reason, they wanted to test its efficacy for the treatment of anxiety among 24 individuals with social phobia.  It should be noted that all 24 of these individuals had never received any sort of prior treatment (e.g. SSRIs) as an intervention for their social anxiety and were considered “treatment-naïve.”

Hemp-based CBD, on the other hand, is most often sourced from legal industrial hemp plants that contain very small amounts of THC. This type of CBD can be grown under the United States Farm Bill. If you are going to be buying oils for anxiety from an online seller, for example, then you will likely be purchasing a product that has been sourced from hemp, rather than marijuana. This is perfectly fine, because even though industrial hemp lacks the mind-altering THC compound, it contains functional amounts of CBD.
Stephanie, generally, I have patients take 20 to 150mg a day for sleep +/- anxiety. Start low and go slow. Know the dosages of your product. Usually 2/3 to 3/4 of the daily dose is 1-2 hours before bedtime, and the other portion is upon waking (to improve wakefulness during the day). Other factors such as stress, hormone replacement, other meds & medical conditions, etc. play a role along with individual differences. I own a compounding pharmacy, so we see a lot of unique needs. I can't give more specific advice in this forum, but there is help!

Clinical and demographic data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and expressed in terms of mean ± standard error of the mean. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to check for normality. Non-parametric Wilcoxon or Friedman tests analyzed results that failed this test. The remained data was analyzed by two-way repeated-measures ANOVA. A preliminary analysis indicated no gender effect; thus, the factors analyzed were drug, order of drug administration (placebo-CBD versus CBD-placebo), and the interaction between drug and phase. A three-way repeated-measures ANOVA was employed to analyze data throughout the three phases of each exam. In case of significant interactions, paired Student’s t-tests were performed at each phase and/or order to compare the differences between groups. In case of significant time effect, the Bonferroni’s post hoc test was used for multiple comparisons. In cases where sphericity conditions were not reached, the degrees of freedom of the repeated factor were corrected with the Huynh-Feldt epsilon. All the analyses were performed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v.20.0.
Out of the 17 states that have passed CBD-only laws, five— Missouri, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas—would also establish licensed cultivation centers to grow high-CBD strains of cannabis, which could be turned into oils and other CBD products. As a consumer, you can look at the manufacturer's website to see whether they batch-test their products, or ask them directly. You could also send a sample of your CBD oil to a testing facility yourself, something Bonn-Miller says he would do if he were trying to treat someone with a severe issue such as epilepsy. Testing can also determine whether the product contains pesticides, heavy metals, or other toxins.

Although the 5-HT1A receptor partial agonism is thought to facilitate a majority of CBD’s anxiolytic effects – hippocampal neurogenesis, opioidergic modulation, and CB1/CB2 inverse agonism likely also contribute.  Lesser researched mechanisms of CBD that could also decrease anxiety include: FAAH inhibition, adenosine reuptake inhibition, GPR55 antagoism, intracellular calcium (Ca2+) increases, and PPAR agonism.  Of these mechanisms, inhibition of FAAH may be most significant in regards to anxiety attenuation.

On the federal level, several bills currently before Congress seek to change the way the government treats CBD. This figure, if accurate, is indeed a substantial number, especially when you take into account the different factors that may be behind this inability to get a decent sleep. If this number is reflective of a population that struggles with getting adequate amounts of sleep, it might suggest a strong need for a remedy that doesn’t mean over-prescribing pharmaceutical sedatives.
Hi Dr. Kevin. Thanks for your question. I have seen people react differently to CBD. For some, yes it can help them relax and sleep. For others, it can make them feel more energetic. And yes, unfortunately for some it may increase their anxiety. For those people, CBD would not be a good fit. You made a good observation about the possibility this has to do with the terpenes involved. There are some theories about that but I have no definitive knowledge on that being the cause.
